50 Years ago a moment in history occurred that arguably many today will never forget. Apollo 11 included astronauts Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. It was the first flight to the moon and the first steps taking by a human on the moon – Armstrong and, shortly after, Collins. This historic event occurred on July 20th, 1969.
Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Medals
Struck in 1oz of Copper, these medals commemorate the Apollo 11 Robbins Medals that were flown on this mission.
Created from Original Dies Mark Armstrong, Neil Armstrong’s son, owned the original dies. Partnering with Armstrong and Sunshine Mint to use the original dies to make new dies to create all medals being released in the series. Sunshine used these original dies to make scans to produce the new dies. These new dies were then used to strike each medal.
The obverse of these medals features the same image as the Apollo 11 patch created by the crew of Apollo 11, with one major difference, the olive branches have been removed from the Eagle's talons. (This image also appeared on circulation coins like the Eisenhower "Ike" dollar and Susan B. Anthony dollars.) The reverse then features the astronaut's names, the date of the launch, the date of the landing and the date of the return along with "50th ANNIVERSARY" and "1969-2019".
What are Robbins Medals?
Robbins Medals have been produced for, and flown on, every manned U.S. mission since Apollo 7. Called the Robbins medals, due to the fact that they were first produced by a company called The Robbins Company in 1968. Between 255 and 450 original Robbins medallions were minted for each Apollo mission. The medallions for the first few flights were struck with blank space on the reverse for the launch and return dates to be added post-flight. For the moon landing missions three blank fields were included for the launch, lunar landing, and return dates.
