History of the Gadsden Flag
The Gadsden flag was historically used by Commodore Edek Hopkins, the United States’ first naval commander in chief. He used it as his personal banner during the American Revolution (1775-1873). The flag was one of several to use the image of a rattlesnake as it was the popular symbol of unity within the American colonies.
Originating in the 1754 political cartoon published by Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Gazette, “Join, or Die,” the colonies were represented as divided by a cut up snake. The cartoon urged the colonies to unite for the French and Indian War (1754-1763). It was then used in the face of the Revolutionary War. It was revealed that in December of 1775, someone wrote to the Pennsylvania Journal claiming that a drum of the Marine Corps featured a rattlesnake alongside the motto “Don’t tread on me!” That same month, Hopkins was appointed commodore of the Continental Congress’s naval forces and his ship, USS Alfred, would raise the flag that combined “Don’t Tread on Me” and the rattlesnake.
