The First Continental Congress convened in 1774, bringing together delegates from 12 of the 13 British colonies that later formed the United States. Held from September 5 to October 26 at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Congress was prompted by the British Navy's blockade of Boston Harbor and the enactment of the Intolerable Acts by the Parliament of Great Britain in response to the Boston Tea Party of December 1773. This striking silver coin commemorates a pivotal moment from the Congress: Patrick Henry of Virginia addressing the delegates, depicted in a mural painted by American artist Allyn Cox in 1974.

The Continental Congress

During the two-month-long session, delegates asserted the colonists' rights as Englishmen and established the Continental Association. This association called for the suspension of trade with Great Britain unless Parliament repealed the Intolerable Acts. Within six months after the Congress concluded, armed conflict erupted on American soil.
