In 2015 the U.S. Mint added a new one-ounce High Relief gold coin to its repertoire. It was described as "a piece that renders contemporary designs using the latest in modern digital and manufacturing technology." The coin was conceptualized by the Mint in mid-2015 after discussions with the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The CCAC recommended a modern view of Liberty that reflects the nation's diversity. The coin was created under authority granted by Congress to the secretary of the Treasury.

The concept was continued with a second American Liberty, with new designs, in 2017. The latter coin bears a dual date of 1992-2017 to recognize the 225th anniversary of U.S. Coinage. The American Liberty High Relief program is slated to continue biennially. In the years between gold issues, the Mint issues collectible .999 fine silver medals featuring the same designs.
