The fourth release in the 2023 American Women Quarters will be available today at 12pm EST. The United States Mint will be honoring Jovita Idar as the quarter dollar will be released in 100-coin bags, 2-roll sets, and 3-roll sets.
Featuring Jovita Idar, the reverse design depicts the champion for the Mexican American cause in an attempt to create a better future for immigrants with her hands clasped. Within her body are inscriptions symbolic of her greatest accomplishments and the newspapers she wrote for. Idar was a journalist, activist, teacher, and suffragist. She dedicated her life to fighting against separatist ideologies and for the civil rights of Mexican Americans. Featured are the inscriptions “MEXICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS,” “TEACHER,” “JOVITA IDAR,” “NURSE,” “EVOLUCIÓN,” “ASTREA,” “EL HERALDO CRISTIANO,” “LA CRUZ BLANCA,” “JOURNALIST,” “LA CRÓNICA,” “EL PROGRESO,” and “LA LIGA FEMENIL MEXICANISTA,” in addition to “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The reverse was designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist, John P. McGraw.
The 100-coin bags and 2-roll sets will be released from Philadelphia and Denver while the 3-roll sets will also include coins from San Francisco.
The four-year series will continue through 2025 and honor five American women each year who have helped shape our nation’s history in a variety of fields including but not limited to civil rights, government, suffrage, humanities, science, space, and the arts. Still upcoming for 2023 is Maria Tallchief.
