It is hard to fathom that in today’s world, we are now used to the idea of cancer. “Used to” being a loose description only because of the effects of the widespread disease being something no one can really get “used to”, especially if it hits too close to home. Every minute of every day, someone is diagnosed with a form of cancer. We all know someone who has gone through or is currently going through the uphill battle, but we all also know someone who has lost that battle. Cancer does not discriminate and we all know that oh so well.
One of the most leading causes of death in women is breast cancer. Although it is a common cancer diagnosis in the United States, it is a worldwide issue that affects women from all over. Here are some facts from the National Breast Cancer Foundation that may or may not surprise you:
- One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
- Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
- Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.
- Each year it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 will die.
- On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes.
- Over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the U.S. today.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and has become a global campaign to raise awareness of the disease that affects so many women, and yes, also men. From the NFL wearing pink in their uniforms to the thousands of 5K walks or runs in attempts to spread the word, the horrific effects of the disease have certainly been forced to the forefront in recent years. There are numerous organizations committed to fighting the disease and of course, one of the most popular ways to bring awareness is with the help of awareness ribbons themselves.
