In conjunction with the Canadian Royal Mint, SilverTowne is proud to be the Exclusive Dealer in the United States for a Brand New 2015 Canadian Silver Coin Series featuring North American Sportfish! The series will highlight four popular species of fish: Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye and Rainbow Trout. The third coin in the North American Sportfish series, Walleye, is now available.
The 2015 Canada Silver North American Sportfish Walleye 1 Ounce Proof coin is certified to be 99.99% pure silver with a diameter of 38 millimeters and a metal weight of 31.39 grams. The reverse image by artist Curtis Atwater depicts a portrait of a walleye fish in pursuit of its prey. Facing the viewer, the walleye appears to be chasing two shiners near the rocky bottom of a body of water. The fish’s sharp teeth, large mouth and eyes are shown in stunning detail. Also visible to great effect is the walleye’s spiny dorsal fin.
Interesting details about Walleye:
Walleye is a freshwater fish native to most of Canada and the Northern United States. The fish grows to about 31 inches in length and weighs up to around 20 pounds. The oldest recorded age of a walleye is 29 years, however in heavily fished areas they rarely reach more than five or six years in age. Although walleye are not in the same family as, or related to, pike, they are sometimes known as walleyed pike, colored pike, yellow pike or pickerel in certain regions.
Walleyes are commonly olive and green in color, with the dorsal side of the fish being olive and grading into a golden hue on the flanks. Distinguishable characteristics of walleye fish include a spinous, pointy dorsal fin and a large mouth full of very sharp teeth. The term “walleyed” refers to pupils that deviate outward from the eyes (the opposite of being “cross-eyed”), so the name “walleye” comes from the fact that the fish’s eyes point outward. Their eyes allow these fish to see well at night and in rough, choppy waters. Their excellent vision also allows them to hunt for prey in deeper waters.
In addition to the Walleye image, the reverse of the coin also includes inscriptions CANADA 2015 and 20 DOLLARS. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, along with inscriptions ELIZABETH II and D.G. REGINA. This coin also features unique edge lettering, with 9999 FINE SILVER 1 OZ 9999 ARGENT PUR 1 OZ engraved around the edge of the coin.
A certificate of authenticity accompanies the coin and attests that the 2015 $20 fine silver coin is proof quality and is authorized by the Government of Canada. Also included is an elegant maroon case enclosed inside a gorgeous box. The silver proof coin was expertly struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, and has a limited mintage of only 6,500 worldwide.
