2015 Homestead 5 oz Silver Coin
The first 2015 Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin release in the America the Beautiful series is now available at SilverTowne. This latest release features Homestead National Monument of America, located in Nebraska. The monument is located in an area that includes some of the first acres that were successfully claimed under the Homestead Act, which upon its passing in 1862 allowed any qualified person to claim up to 160 acres of federally owned land. The cry of the day was FREE LAND! It’s not surprising that the Homestead Act played a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States of America.
The only "cost" to the recipient was a requirement to stay in residence on the land for a minimum of five years, all the while cultivating and improving the property (which included the building of a home, breaking soil and planting crops). According to the National Park Service website, to plow one acre by hand one would have to walk 10 miles, so to plow a full 10 acres a homesteader would have had to walk a minimum of 100 miles!
Visitors to the Homestead National Monument of America are greeted with a 100 acre tallgrass prairie, a representation of the ecosystem that once covered the central plains of the United States. The prairie has been maintained by the National Park Service for more than 60 years and is the oldest in the National Park System. You can get an up-close-and-personal look at the prairie, along the with neighboring bur oak woodland and Cub Creek, by hiking the over two miles of available trails.
Also on location are the plow-shaped Homestead Heritage Center and the Homestead Education Center, where you can see exhibits and learn about the Homestead Act’s influence on immigration, agriculture, industrialization, native tribes and the American ecosystem. Additional buildings on site include the Palmer-Epard Cabin, a one-room cabin built in the area in 1867 measuring 14 x 16 feet (a size considered luxurious at the time), and the Freeman School, a one-room schoolhouse which was the longest running one-room school in Nebraska history (from 1872-1967).
The 5oz silver bullion Homestead National Monument of America coin is the 26th issued in the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful series. The reverse of the coin features a log cabin, a water pump and two corn stalks – which together represent the three fundamentals of survival common to all homesteaders: shelter, water and food. Inscriptions include HOMESTEAD, NEBRASKA, 2015 and E PLURBIS UNUM. This coin’s precise and detailed design is exactly 3 inches in diameter, weighs 5 troy ounces and contains .999 fine silver.
The obverse design is the same as that of the ATB quarters, showing the image of George Washington with the same quarter dollar inscriptions – UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR. Like all 5oz ATB collector versions before it, this release is produced with an uncirculated finish at the Philadelphia US Mint and therefore displays a "P" mint mark. Furthermore, the edge of each coin is incused with the coin’s fineness and weight.
