$10 Gold Indian Replica 1oz .999 Silver Medallion - The September 2014 Silver of the Month

2014 September Silver of the Month

For the September 2014 SilverTowne Silver of the Month, we are featuring our $10 Gold Indian Replica struck in .999 Silver Medallion. Much like the 2014 50th Anniversary commemorative Gold Kennedy Half Dollar has made a recent splash with collectors, the $10 Gold Indian coin (also known as the Indian Head Eagle coin) has proved to be a popular gold coin with many collectors over the years. However, gold coins are out of reach for some collectors – making the 1oz .999 silver replica medallion a great alternative for adding this unique design to almost any collection.

The $10 Gold Indian coin was struck regularly by the United States Mint from 1907 through 1916, and continued to be produced on a more irregular basis until 1933. The coin was one of four gold circulating pieces during that time – which included the double eagle ($20), eagle ($10), half eagle ($5) and quarter eagle ($2.50). The obverse and reverse designs were originally designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on other denominations, but were eventually chosen for use on the $10 Indian Head Eagle coin.

Sadly, Saint-Gaudens lost a battle with cancer in August of 1907, 3 months prior to the $10 Gold Indian Head’s release into circulation. In 1908, Chief Engraver for the U.S. Mint, Charles E. Barber, updated the coin by adding the motto "In God We Trust" per a bill passed by Congress, and by making a few other minor modifications to the design itself.

The obverse of the $10 Gold Indian Silver Replica Medallion features a portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a full Native American headdress. The headdress was added to the original gold coin later in the design process at the insistence of President Roosevelt, even though this type of head gear would have only been worn by male warriors. The term LIBERTY appears in a band on the headdress. There are thirteen stars around the top of the Indian Head.

On the reverse of the silver replica medallion is a rendition of the Saint-Guadens’ standing eagle that appears on the $10 Gold Indian coin. The eagle is standing on a bundle of arrows and has an olive branch at its feet. Underneath this design on the replica is the SilverTowne logo. Around the top of the eagle is incused ONE OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER. The silver replica medallion is true to the original 1907 design of the gold eagle coin and does not include the motto In God We Trust.
