Pledge Silver Rounds
The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States has been in the news often over the past few years for one phrase – under God – which was added to the pledge in 1954. Whatever your beliefs are regarding the inclusion of these words, one thing that most people agree on is the patriotic significance of the pledge itself. Many meetings, both public and private, across the United States of America open with the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Pledge of Allegiance was originally composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892, at the request of a popular children’s magazine The Youth’s Companion, with the hopes of instilling American nationalism into the country’s youth (in conjunction with a similar effort to insert United States flags into schools across the country). This was a felt need at the time in order to help the nation heal and bring the United States back together following the American Civil War.
The words "under God" being added hasn’t been the only change to the pledge over the years. The word "to" was added before "the republic" shortly after the original pledge was penned in 1892. Then in 1923 the phrase "my flag" was changed to "the Flag of the United States". One year later, in 1924, "of America" was added after "the United States". Then the final change to this date was made on Flag Day in 1954 when "under God" was added after "one Nation". All of the changes to the pledge with the exception of under God were made to the original composition prior to the words being adopted by Congress as the pledge, which occurred in 1942. The official name of The Pledge of Allegiance wasn’t adopted until three years later in 1945.
The SilverTowne Mint has recently introduced a new silver medallion honoring The Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge of Allegiance 1oz .999 Silver Medallion features a patriotic bald eagle in front of a waving American Flag on its obverse, while the reverse includes the full text of The Pledge of Allegiance along with inscriptions ONE TROY OUNCE and .999 FINE SILVER. Add this patriotic silver bullion to your collection.
THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
