2012 Denalie 5 oz Silver Coin
The final 2012 Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin release in the America the Beautiful series is now available at SilverTowne. This latest release features Denali National Park, located in the interior of Alaska. The central attraction of the 6-million-acre national park is Denali (also known as Mount McKinley), the highest mountain in North America.
The multiple names in reference to the same mountain stems from a long-standing dispute over the name. The word Denali means "the high one" or "the great one" in the native language of the Alaskan Natives living around the mountain, and Alaskans have long used the name for the mountain. In 1897 the mountain was named Mount McKinley after President William McKinley, who was from Ohio, by a local prospector. In 1980 the Alaska Board of Geographic Names officially changed the name back to "Denali" on their books, whereas the U.S. Board of Geographic Names continues to maintain the name "McKinley".
Whatever you choose to call the mountain, it is a breathtaking ice-capped land mass reaching high into the sky. Surrounding the mountain peak throughout Denali National Park is forest, tundra, glaciers, rock and, of course, snow at the highest elevations. Visitors to the park enjoy mountain climbing, backpacking, camping, viewing of wildlife, and wintertime snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and the Alaskan favorite, dog-sledding.
The reverse of the 2012 P Denali 5oz Silver Coin features a Dall sheep, sporting its large curved horns, standing in the foreground, with Denali/Mount McKinley towering in the background. Inscribed on the perimeter around the design is DENALI, ALASKA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and 2012. The coin measures an impressive three-inches in diameter, weighs 5 troy ounces, and contains .999 fine silver. Like all 5oz ATB collector versions before it, the 15th release in the series is produced with an uncirculated finish at the Philadelphia US Mint and therefore displays a "P" mint mark. Furthermore, the edge of each coin is incused with the coin’s fineness and weight.
